How much of my car can I claim?

Enter the year’s business and total kilometres and your vehicle expenses. If you kept a full logbook in an earlier base year, add the percentages to check whether a three-month sample is enough this year.

How this is estimated

What the calculator assumes.

Simplified logbook. After one full year of logbook records (the base year), you can keep a logbook for a three-month sample in later years. The calculated business use is the sample percentage divided by the base year’s percentage for the same months, times the base year’s annual percentage. If that is more than 10 points away from the base year, the base year no longer applies. Source: CRA, motor vehicle records.

What counts. Driving from home to your regular workplace is personal; trips to showings, listings and client meetings are business. Keep the date, destination, purpose and kilometres for each trip, for example in the mileage logbook.

Limits. Passenger vehicles have caps on capital cost allowance, interest and lease costs. Employees claim on Form T777 and need a T2200 from their employer.
